Dr. Huxtable Says ‘It’s the Gun Stupid’

Apr 08, 12 Dr. Huxtable Says ‘It’s the Gun Stupid’

Invitations to the After Party

In a recent interview when asked about the controversy surrounding the Trayvon Martin case, famed Comedian and long-time personal responsibility advocate, Bill Cosby, placed the blame on “the gun”.  Though details have yet to fully emerge regarding the circumstances of the case, what is known is that neighborhood watch member, George Zimmerman, shot unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin to death.  Zimmerman has stated that the incident was in self defense, but the evidence has yet to exonerate or convict Mr. Zimmerman of his actions.  So what if any merit does Mr. Cosby’s statement hold?  Is the gun to blame for Trayvon Martin’s death?

Later in the interview, Cosby goes on to state that “The power-of-the-gun mentality had him unafraid to confront someone. Even police call for backup in similar situations.”  He then goes on to say “When you carry a gun, you mean to harm somebody, kill somebody.”  While you have to give Cosby credit for the hypothetical supposition, that maybe Zimmerman doesn’t approach Trayvon if he doesn’t have a gun, and maybe they both go on their merry ways; one cannot assume that which is not born in reality.  The reality is that Zimmerman DID have a gun, and that he DID approach Trayvon Martin.  As to what type of exchange occurred that would lead Mr. Zimmerman to use lethal force has yet to be made known.  But is the solution to all of our woes really to simply unarm the neighborhood watch guard?  While I’m inclined to believe the solution is much more complicated than that, I am curious as to what you think?  Leave your comments below.
